2009 Security Suite Putdown
PC World compared 9 of the major Security Suites on detection and elimination of security threats, firewall performance, scan speeds and price. The nine are Avira Premium Security Suite 8.2, BitDefender Internet Security 2009, F-Secure Internet Security 2009, Kapersky Internet Security 2009, McAfee Internet Security Suite 2009, Panda Internet Security Suite 2009, Semantic Norton Internet Security 2009, Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2009 and Webroot Internet Security Essentials.

While PC World rated the suites on detection of malware and elimination of malware, it left out an important telling statistic: Malware remaining after the detection and elimination. The PC World statistics are in percentages rather than raw scores. This makes for easier comparisons. The amount of residual infection is 100 minus the product of detections and eliminations or
RI = 100 - (D*E)

The best or lowest infection rate was 21%. The highest was 51%. The median (middle score) was 46%. So on average you can expect to have a 46% infection rate with these suites. If you are fortunate to obtain the best suite for this measure, your infection rate will be 21%

With these sad statistics, it matters little what the scan speeds or firewall performance is. The Wizard recommends that you do not by an internet security suite at all!
